Chapter Twelve

To say I was nervous when we pulled up outside Simons Richards' house would be an understatement. I'd seen people in the throes of grief before. Susan had been devastated and couldn't stop crying when I'd visited her after her friend Tanya's death, but at least she already knew of the death.

“I don't think I should be here,” I said to Kate as we sat in the car.

She'd gone home to change and await some details in relation to Simon's death before returning to the cottage to collect me. Kate had replaced her simple jeans and T-shirt with one of the signature grey trouser suits she always wore for work. She'd also tied her hair back into a harsh ponytail. To my surprise Drew, had joined us.

“Oh, you most definitely shouldn't,” she agreed, flashing a look at Drew, who pretended not to be stuck in the car with us. “But you might notice something we don't. Keep quiet and follow my lead. It's doubtful Mrs Richards will wonder who you are after she learns of her husband's death.”

I huffed out a deep breath and nodded before leaving the car to follow Kate and Drew to the Richards' residence.

She turned to face me at the door before giving me some more advice. “It's normal for two people to make the notification,” she said. “One to do the talking, me, and one to watch for a reaction and call for medical assistance should the person go into shock.”

“Is that likely?” I didn't know how I'd deal with someone in shock. Normally, I'd have a suitable essential oil in the shop to help me, but I hadn't thought to stop in and gather anything.

“It does happen, at times. You can never predict how someone will react. Everyone's different.” She motioned to Officer Johnson and added. “Drew will watch for that. I just need you to be on the lookout for anything unusual. Okay?”

I nodded and took in a deep breath before turning my attention to the house while trying to ignore the knot growing in my stomach. It was a nice detached with a large front garden and bay-fronted windows. The curtains were open in the living room, and I spotted a woman vacuuming the carpet, which explained the grumbly hum that came from the house. We had to ring the bell three times before someone heard, turned the vacuum cleaner off, someone answered the door.

“Mrs Richards?” Kate asked the young woman with a fresh face, long wavy hair tied back in a loose bun, and ashy-brown eyes the colour of Smokey Quartz.

“Who is it, Keri?” The voice that answered came from inside the house and not from the woman who'd answered the door and was cleaning the floor.

“The police,” Keri answered when Kate flashed her badge and conveyed that we had something important to talk with Mrs Richards about.

A lady, a little older than me at around fifty, with short silver-blonde hair and glasses, popped her head through one of the many doorways.
